Samsung’s Galaxy S, declared at the CTIA Wireless show earlier in March this year, has finally been launched in June, commencing in Asia.
It was not difficult to imagine why the Galaxy S was at once compared to Apple’s iPhone 3GS. Firstly, you can definitely see the similarities in their external casing. It does not help that the user interface layout and design are NEARLY the same in both the Galaxy S (Android) and the iPhone 3GS (Apple). Let’s take a closer look at the two models and compare their features.
For this article, we will not be going into too much details into technicalities but instead focus on what everyday consumers are more concerned about. That is, the size, dimensions and weight of the handset, the image display and observable features such as the internal memory and the built-in camera.
Galaxy S measures 122.4 by 64.2 by 9.9 millimeters while the iPhone 3GS are 115.5 by 62.1 by 12.3 mm. Galaxy S is also considerably lighter than iPhone 3GS which weights 118grams and 135 g respectively.
Although the internal memory of the iPhone is bigger compared to that of the Galaxy S’s – which had only 16MB, the Galaxy S does have the choice of using a microSD card that can go as big as 32 GB.
Both models have built in cameras that sported autofocus. Galaxy S comes with a 5 megapixel camera with face and smile detection features while iPhone only has a standard 3.15 megapixel camera. As a incentive, the Galaxy S also provides consumers with a built in stereo FM radio while iPhone is confined to music that the consumer has in the phone.
For display. here is what the mobile phones are using. iPhone 3GS uses a 3.5 inch TFT touch screen. For the Galaxy S, it comes with a 4.0 inch Super AMOLED touchscreen. The Super AMOLED differs from many other video display technologies in that the layer which detects touch is integrated into the same screen rather than being overlaid on top. This is the primary reason why the Galaxy S managed to be even thinner than the iPhone 3GS, has greater touch sensitivity and better image display .
To be honest, Samsung has a sure winner in the Super AMOLED technology that has made its image display much better than that of the iPhone 3GS TFT technology and even the iPhone 4 Retina. With a whole list of other advantages over the iPhone 3GS, it might be worth considering the Galaxy S over the iPhone if you are contemplating your next handset upgrade.
